Man taken into custody after standoff in Montville

MONTVILLE TWP. — A standoff in Montville Township on Wednesday ended peacefully at roughly 5 p.m., police said. Montville police were dispatched to a residence on Forest Lake Drive around 12:30 p.m. regarding a man who had threatened plumbers with a firearm, according to a news release from Montville police. The contractors were on the property to provide a quote. The contractors safely left the residence and contacted police. Multiple attempts to establish communication with the suspect at the residence were unsuccessful. Based on facts available at the time, and the fact that a firearm was involved, a perimeter was established in the surrounding area with officers from multiple jurisdictions, until the Medina County SWAT Team could respond to the scene. Once on scene, the SWAT Team assumed tactical operations. After multiple attempts to contact the suspect, entry was made into the residence. At 4:59 pm, SWAT officers located the suspect, 30-year-old Phillip A. Polefrone, in the basement of the home. Polefrone was uninjured and taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Medina County Jail where he was incarcerated on one count of aggravated menacing, a first-degree misdemeanor. Montville police thanked law enforcement partners for their "incredible team work in ensuring a safe outcome for Mr. Polerfrone and all of the residents of Montville Township," the release said. More than 20 law enforcement vehicles from numerous agencies, including the Medina County SWAT Team and Montville police, were on the scene. Others that responded were Medina police, Medina Township police, Medina County Sheriff's Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol and Medina Life Support Team.
