Library's summer reading game begins June 1

MEDINA — The 2021 Summer Reading Game at Medina County District Library kicks off June 1 and runs through Aug. 31. "It is all back to 'normal' with kids picking up the game board at the library and teens playing online but claiming prizes at the library throughout the summer," Suzie Muniak, district library assistant director, said in a statement. "Planned events are still virtual, and you can sign up at mcdl.info/Events. But watch on social media for the return of some small, in person events, following all current COVID-19 protocols." The 2021 theme, "Tails and Tales," features animals and the library mascot, Freddie the Frog. The theme also lends itself to a focus on STEM and STEAM events and early literacy efforts for babies and preschoolers. The Summer Reading Game focuses on reading improvement and enjoyment among youth participants during the summer months. Youth ages birth through entering fifth grade may play the children's game in the library. The children's game features a game board to track reading progress and two prizes along the way, including a book of choice upon completion. Students entering sixth grade through 2021 graduates may play the teen game. This game is played entirely online. Log minutes read to collect a prize and a book of choice. Complete the game to be entered to win one of eight grand prizes, which include an art bundle, influencer bundle, Bluetooth headphones and more. The 2021 Summer Reading Game is made possible through donations from the Friends of Medina County District Library, Akron Community Foundation, Ohio Children's Foundation, Stuart and Pat Neal and Medina City Teachers Association. Children's author Kate Messner will be on a Zoom call with readers at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 8. Messner is the award-winning author of children's picture books, novels and nonfiction. Her popular titles include novels "Breakout" and "Chirp," the "Ranger in Time" series, and the "History Smasher" series. In other news: • Brian Harr was appointed to the Medina County District Library board of trustees. Harr first moved to Medina in 1998. After moving away for seven years, he returned home in January 2020. During his career in business, he has been involved in community organizations and is now looking forward to serving the library community. Harr and his wife, Susan, live just off Public Square in Medina. They have two adult children and three grandchildren. • Fiscal Officer Kelly Kroll retired in February with nine years of MCDL service and more than 30 years of service to Ohio libraries. Molly Koch, a resident of Wadsworth, was hired by the board at the January meeting as the new fiscal officer. • Maggie Hershberger retired in February with more than 34 years of service at the Lodi Library Customer Service Department.
