High school track: Cloverleaf girls grab first league title in school history

RAVENNA — In the first Metro Athletic Conference Championships, the Cloverleaf girls track team did something no other squad in program history had done. The Colts cruised past second-place Woodridge 161-134 to win the first conference championship in school history. "It was a lot of hard work, but it feels good to be able to help accomplish my goals," sprinter Riley Evans said. "It means a lot to win the conference because we've never won it. I think that's a really cool accomplishment, especially in my first year." Evans was a driving force to Cloverleaf winning the championship after she captured the 100 (12.76), 200 (26.18) and 400 meters (58.62). The time in the 400 topped the freshman's previous personal record. She also paired with Emily Romano, Paige Munchick and Julia Armogida to win the 4x200 relay. "As a freshman in this league with some very talented sprinters, for (Evans) to win the 100, 200 and the 400 and to be on the winning 4x2, it's quite the meet," Colts coach Garth Gucker said. "It speaks volumes for how hard she works and how talented she is." Evans was joined by Sophia Spencer as an event winner Thursday. The senior dominated the field in the 3,200 with a time of 11:29.71. Fellow Colts distance runner Maria Porras came in second in 12:04.57. Woodridge's Eloise Willett was third, more than 46 seconds behind Spencer. Spencer (5:15.55) also finished third in the 1,600 behind Woodridge's Reese Reaman (5:10.42) and Cloverleaf's Alyssa Stoner (5:14.38). "It felt good to be at leagues and to be winning it, because leagues is always my favorite meet of the year," Spencer said. "Today went well and it felt good to get my PR in the mile by 10 seconds." Ashley Sigmon gave the Colts their only other victory when she won the high jump Tuesday. Sigmon followed that effort with a runner-up finish in the long jump at 16 feet, 11 inches, just behind Field's Savannah Rahe (16-11 3/4). Emma Malikowski finished third in the high jump and long jump. "It's a special group of girls with great seniors and some great underclassmen that have bought into the program and are doing what they can to help the team," Gucker said. "We had some outstanding performances up and down the roster and I could not be more proud of the way the girls responded." The Cloverleaf boys team finished in third place with 109 points, just behind runner-up Field's 112 and well behind champion Woodridge's 183. The Bulldogs won eight of 14 events. The Colts, who did not win an event, found themselves short-handed in the sprinter department due to COVID-19 quarantine protocols. "As a team we did good and did all that we could," senior Blake Wilson said. "We were short on some of our sprinters and that's going to cost us some points on how we thought we could have done today, but overall I'm very proud." Wilson finished second in the 200 with a time of 23.05 and ran a leg on the runner-up 4x1 and 4x2 relays. The 4x8 finished second Tuesday. Long jumper Jacob Nau finished second with a leap of 19-6 3/4 and Andrew Hibler took second in the 1,600 in 4:36.68. Metro Athletic Conference Championship Girls Standings: 1. Cloverleaf 161, 2.
