High school lacrosse: Medina girls blow out Brunswick

BRUNSWICK — You can take Brunswick out of the Greater Cleveland Conference in girls lacrosse, but Medina will always see red when it sees the Blue Devils. That scenario played out Tuesday as the Bees came into Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium and walked out a 23-3 non-league winner. "I think it's because it's a Medina rival," Medina middie Sadie Hinkle said. "Medina wants to always beat Brunswick. It's something we always look forward to when we play this game." That's what you get when the Bees (10-3) play the Blue Devils (7-3) in anything. The two came in with the best records in Medina County, but Medina proved its still the top of the crop. There is crossover all over the place between the schools when it comes to club teams, so April 27 was circled on many a calendar despite Brunswick playing in the Northern Ohio Lacrosse League this season. "I feel like both teams know we have to come out and fight for it," Medina middie Jackie Meyers said. "We did a really good job. We came out strong and finished strong." As it turned out, it was a goal from Brunswick that actually woke up Medina. Brunswick's Keagen Burden scored with 16:21 left in the first half to make it 3-2 Bees. It was the last time Brunswick scored in the half and kicked off a 10-goal barrage to make it 13-2 at the break and bring on a running clock. "Medina is an incredible team," Brunswick interim coach Emily Weir said. "They're a really strong group of athletes. Hanging with them the first 10 or 15 minutes was a little victory in our books. Mentally coming back from that will be a challenge. It's something we will keeping working toward." The avalanche of goals reached 14 straight before Maggie McGinnis scored for Brunswick with 14:33 left in the second half. That's the way it's been for Medina this season as the Bees ride a three-game winning streak. In those six games, the squad has scored 59 goals as Hinkle, Meyers and Co. have peppered keepers seemingly at will. Hinkle (6 goals, 2 assists), Meyers (5 goals), Mia DiPerna (4 goals), Lucy O'Cull (3 goals, 3 assists), Claire Dorman (2 goals) and Maddi Zaccaro (2 assists) didn't give Brunswick much of a chance Tuesday with multi-point games. "We have a team where everybody scores," Medina coach Colleen Bodkin said. "We really do and it's almost every game. We've had all seven score before and two or three have gotten more than one goal. We don't tend to start off very strong, but once we get into the swing of things, they really are impossible to stop." For the Blue Devils, the contest shows them what they need to work on with five games remaining before the postseason "There's a lot to learn from tonight," Weir said. "We're not closing this chapter. We learn from what Medina did tonight and what we didn't do. We'll come back tomorrow and focus on the little things we can change. Then, we put it behind us.
