Wadsworth readies spring cleanup, resumes full yard waste program

WADSWORTH — Spring cleanup through Wadsworth Solid Waste Transfer is set to begin next week after the city resumed its full-fledged yard waste program at the start of April. Spring cleanup was cancelled last year due to COVID-19, Public Service Manager Robert Patrick said Tuesday. "This is not meant to bring outside items in from other areas," he said while laying out acceptable spring cleanup items. "We have a list of things we do and don't take that's available on our website and social media. We appreciate everyone taking a look at that to make sure they understand what to put out and what not to put out." Items cited by Patrick on Tuesday as spring cleanup acceptable include additional bags of trash next to city containers, which isn't normally allowed. Others specified were bicycles, household items, and moderate amounts of brush. "You can maybe have a little more (brush) that you'd normally have for yard waste pickup but we want folks to limit that to a small amount of brush, under a pickup truck load," he said. "It's not a time to have someone come, trim all of your trees and pile the curb up." Unacceptable waste for spring cleanup includes household appliances, computer equipment, hazardous household material, furniture and general bulk items. "The item has to be small enough where one person can pick it up," at-large Councilwoman Patricia Haskins said. "Paint, construction material, and debris are things that have to be sourced and separated and put in a different waste stream," Patrick said. "Basically, put out things for spring cleanup you'd normally put in your trash, but you can have more of it. Folks can call the transfer station to schedule something for their bulk items, we do provide that service, too." The city's yard waste program has been resumed at 100 percent capacity after abbreviated winter months. Those services are by appointment only with one to two days advance notice required. "We started April 1 with the yard waste at full steam," Patrick said. "We're pickup up each week and that can be put in trash bags or put in under 30-gallon trash containers. That's flowers, weeds, high grass, grass clippings, those types of things. Folks can also put out bundles of branches, but keep them two by four for one person to handle."
