High school basketball: Medina's Corey Tripp named to all-Ohio first team

Corey Tripp earned his final and greatest award as a Medina boys basketball player. The senior point guard was named to the Division I All-Ohio first team Tuesday by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association and joined a select club with Jon Teske (2016) and Tony Stockman (2000) as Bees players to accomplish the feat. That wasn't all, as Brunswick's Marquis Barnett was second team and the Blue Devils' Tre Massey was third team, marking the first time Medina County placed three players on any of the top three teams, regardless of division. The only instances of two were in 1993 (Highland's Rob Wininger, D-II first team and Medina's Ryan Sooy, D-I third team) and 1998 (Highland's Brad Reusch, D-II first team and Black River's Richard Jackson, D-III second team). The 6-foot-3 Tripp already had been named Gazette MVP as well as Northeast Inland D-I co-Player of the Year with Canton McKinley's Kobe Johnson, who oddly was the D-I Ohio Player of the Year outright. Tripp scored 1,325 career points and averaged 23.7 points this winter while leading the Bees to the regional finals for the third time in school history. The offensively skilled 6-3 Barnett, who recently committed to D-I Presbyterian (S.C.), played virtually all five positions and put up a dizzying all-around stat line of 24.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.9 steals and 2.4 blocks while helping the Blue Devils average 73.1 points, ranking eighth in county history. The 6-2 Massey broke county records for 3-pointers in a game (12), season (117) and career (285) while averaging 23.9 points as a senior. His .500 percentage from 3-point range this season is a county record among players with more than 100 attempts, while his .919 free throw percentage ranks second to former teammate Kyle Goessler's .943 in 2017-18. Wadsworth guard Solomon Callaghan and Medina center Christian Howard were honorable mention. Callaghan posted 14.5 points per game and became only the second county sophomore to be named All-Ohio (Brunswick's Tyler Ferrell, 2008), while Howard averaged 11.7 points and 7.2 rebounds. Numerous other players from The Gazette's 48-school coverage area also were honored. In D-I, Mentor's Luke Chicone was first team and Solon's Marcus Steele was third team. Copley's Khoi Thurmon, North Royalton's Omar Abuhamdeh, Mentor's Jonah Waag, Normandy's Stefan Stanic and Parma's Allan Eason were honorable mention. In D-II, Bay's Ashton Price (second team) and Holy Name's Josh Petrilla (third team) were the highest honorees. Revere's Jimmy Salamone, Norton's Tommy Reynolds and Keystone's Ryan Walsh were special mention, while Revere's Andrew Rinn, Firelands' Mitchell Hodges and Holy Name's Logan O'Brien were honorable mention. In D-III, Columbia's Caleb Boring was special mention. Honorable mention went to Oberlin's Trajen Chambers and Columbia's Brandon Fisher.
