Akron kidnapping suspect arrested in Medina County

YORK TWP. — A multi-car pursuit through Medina County that started in Akron resulted in the apprehension of a kidnapping suspect on state Route 18 and Route 252 on Tuesday. Akron police were chasing 34-year-old David Clegg, who allegedly kidnapped his 70-year-old mother in Akron and eventually made his way through Medina County. Medina Police Chief Ed Kinney said the pursuit came up Wadsworth Road, through the square, out West Liberty Street and ended in York Township. Akron Lt. Michael Miller said Clegg was taken into custody and taken to Akron General Hospital. When he is released, he is expected to face several charges, including abduction and a host of traffic charges from Akron to York Township. Miller said he likely will be taken to Summit County Jail. His mother, Brenda Clegg, of Massillon, was "unharmed and safe," Miller said. She has an extensive medical history and was thought to be danger. Akron police were dispatched to the Courtesy Inn on West Market Street at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Clegg's parents had gotten him a hotel room, but he wouldn't get out of the backseat of his father's 2009 red Kia Spectra. Clegg jumped behind the wheel — with his mother in the car — and took off east on Market Street toward Medina County. Soon, several police vehicles were in pursuit. Stop sticks were used to eventually stop the car at about 2:55 a.m. at 6566 Norwalk Road. Police said David Clegg, who is homeless, could have been under the influence.
