Hinckley woman wins Make-A-Wish home raffle The annual Home for the Holldays Raffle, which is a big fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, sold more than $677,000 worth of tickets with one local woman having a life-changing win. The winning ticket, drawn on New Year's Eve, named Hinckley resident Deborah Rascan as the winner. Rascan, who is a caretaker for her elderly mother, chose a cash prize of more than $133,000 instead of the custom-built Strongsville home valued at more than $495,0000. Proceeds from the raffle benefit Make-A-Wish OKI and the HBA's Charitable and Education Foundation. More than 2,100 children in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana are waiting right now for a wish; more than 600 of those children are waiting due to COVID-19. Medina SPCA met campaign goal The Medina County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ran its 2020 HERO Campaign from Oct. 15 to Dec. 15, requesting items such as food, treats, blankets, toys and monetary donations to provide for housing, medical funds and veterinary care. Thanks to the generosity of two donors, all donations were matched dollar for dollar, ultimately allowing the organization to meet its campaign goal. "This past year was so unpredictable due to the pandemic, and unfortunately, we were forced to cancel our major fundraisers leading to a significant loss of income for our organization," George "Hub" Marquis, president of Medina County SPCA, said in a statement. "Yet, even during these uncertain times, the generosity of our donors has been amazing. Their unwavering support has allowed us to continue our mission of protecting and caring for the animals in our community." Red Cross honors University of Akron athletic trainers for saving a life University of Akron athletic trainers John Walters and Kalie Jenkins called on their American Red Cross training in 2020 to save the life of a spectator who was experiencing chest pains during an indoor track meet. For their heroic and lifesaving action, Walters and Jenkins received the Red Cross Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders from the Red Cross of Greater Akron and the Mahoning Valley during a virtual ceremony Jan. 13. The award is the highest award given by the Red Cross. "Their actions exemplify our mission to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies," Rachel Telegdy, executive director for the Red Cross of Greater Akron and the Mahoning Valley, said in an email. It was Jan. 11, 2020, when, noticing the spectator was suffering from chest pains, Walters and Jenkins quickly responded, allowing their Red Cross training to kick in. They began to deliver breath and chest compressions and administered an AED until first responders were able to arrive. The spectator survived and made a full recovery.
