CBS News feature on Gibson's Bakery lawsuit wins Emmy

A feature story about the Gibson's Bakery lawsuit against Oberlin College that aired last year has won a News and Documentary Emmy, one of television's top awards, for Outstanding Feature Story in a Newscast. "Today, we celebrate, alongside our client, Gibson's Bakery in Oberlin, Ohio, an Emmy win for the CBS Sunday Morning segment that shared their story," the law firm of Tzangas Plakas Mannos Ltd. wrote on its website, lawlion.com. The feature story, which aired on "CBS Sunday Morning" on Nov. 3, was hosted by famed broadcast journalist and news anchor Ted Koppel. Watch it HERE. It included interviews with the late David Gibson — who died less than two weeks after the story aired — as well as Oberlin College President Carmen Twillie Ambar, Chronicle-Telegram reporter Dave O'Brien and a member of the jury who awarded the Gibsons millions of dollars in damages from the college, among others who were involved in the case or reported on it. The law firm said the feature documented "the Gibson family's fight to protect their business against false allegations of racism." "As David Gibson's last television interview, it's a fitting tribute to a man who fought tirelessly to preserve his family's reputation and demonstrate that the truth still matters," the law firm said. Both Oberlin College, which was ordered by a Lorain County Common Pleas Court jury and Judge John Miraldi to pay the Gibsons and their attorneys more than $35 million in damages and fees, has appealed the ruling on numerous grounds. Through their attorneys, the Gibsons also have appealed the ruling on several legal grounds, including what they say is an unconstitutional cap on damages that Ohio courts may award victims of defamation and libel. The law firm, which was founded in 1957 and has offices in Canton and Akron, said it continues to represent the Gibson family through the appeals process.
