Medical examiner: Death of Medina woman after Marathon ruled accidental

CLEVELAND – The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office released the cause of death for a Medina woman who collapsed while running the 42nd annual Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon.Taylor Paige Ceepo, 22, of Medina, died from sudden cardiac death in association with physical exertion, pseudoephedrine use and cardiomyopathy.According to the Mayo Clinic, cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that makes it harder for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body. Cardiomyopathy can lead to heart failure. Pseudoephedrine is a commonly used decongestant.Ceepo collapsed May 19 near the marathon finish line near E. 9th Street and Superior Avenue and was taken to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, where she died.The medical examiner's office ruled the death an accident. The autopsy report has not been completed and is not yet available, according to the medical examiner's office.Ceepo was a high-level athlete, according to friends and associates who spoke out in the days following her death.She graduated from Walsh University this spring where she starred on the women's soccer team. After her soccer career was over, she started running, something her mother and younger sister already did.Her former club director with the Internationals, a top-ranked club soccer team based out of Pinnacle Sports in Granger Township, said previously that Ceepo was prepared for the13.1-mile half-marathon course.Ceepo graduated from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron in 2015.The May race say was warm as temperatures climbed into the low 80s by late morning, according to the National Weather Service.Officials from University Hospitals, which provided medical support during the race, told Cleveland media outlets they treated between 60 and 70 racers along the course for such things as heat illnesses, dehydration, muscle strain and injuries.
